The Marx Brothers reigned supreme as practitioners of anarchic humor through much of the first half of the twentieth century, blending razor-sharp wit with laugh-out-loud physical gags, heavily influenced by their Jewish heritage and – at least initially – driven by the singular determination of their manager mother, Minnie. In this series, we’ll look at the career of the wacky brothers – with particular focus on their films from The Cocoanuts (1929) to Love Happy (1949) – that transformed them from immigrant sons to vaudeville performers to movie stars to indelible pop culture icons.
