SPICE: The Korean War

Thursdays, January 6, 13, 20 and 27 (10:30 a.m.-noon)

Course Summary: The year 2020 marked the 70th Anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War, when on June 25,1950, North Korea invaded South Korea. Often called the Forgotten War, perhaps more appropriately, it should be called the ignored war. This “police action” as it was dubbed in order to avoid a declaration of war, exacerbated the Cold War, delayed recognition of the People’s Republic of China, brought about the desegregation of the Armed Forces of the United States and saved the U.S. Marine Corps. It was also a very bloody war. This course covers the background to the war, and the creation of two Koreas; the conduct of the war, including the initial defeat of the U. S. Forces, the defeat of North Korea, the intervention by forces of the Peoples Republic of China, the U. S. intelligence failure, the Chosin Reservoir, the Bugout, the turnaround under General Matthew B. Ridgway, the defeat of the Chinese, the relief of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, the peace talks, and what has happened to the two Koreas since the war.

Facilitator: Rex Rehfeld has a B.S. from the University of CA and a J.D. from the University of MD. He has lectured on a variety of historical topics in many Lifelong Learning programs around the Baltimore area. Rex served in the Navy in WW II and in the Army during the Korean War and beyond. After leaving the service, Rex served as an investment counselor until his retirement in 2014.
