Broadway Begins: The Lights and Legends 1890-1920 (Part Two)

Course Summary: Get your ticket to the world of Broadway musicals. From 1890-1920, immigrants flocked to the United States. Many of them had extraordinary talent and found their way into the theatres of lower Manhattan and then to the new theatre district called “Times Square”.
In the second four weeks of this two-part course, we will learn about the first composers and lyricists of Broadway including Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, and Jerome Kern. We will meet the dynamic entrepreneurs of “Tin Pan Alley” where song writing and publishing began. We will enjoy memorable film productions along with the unforgettable songs via nostalgic and historic video clips. This four week course will be an opportunity for an enriching and enlightening experience of how America’s entertainment industry began.

Facilitator: Ellen Katz is an “edutainer” extraordinaire. Her audiences now consist of adults up and down the East Coast. She provides extremely lively and interactive programs. Dressed in costumes that go along with the musical being discussed, Ellen will transport you and make you feel as if you are a part of these iconic musicals.

Registration Policies:

• All SPICE courses must be registered for and paid for in their entirety by the first session.
• SPICE fees are per head, not per household, with a 50% off fee for second registrants within the same household.
• A minimum of 15 enrollees per class is required.
